Traditional RPA technologies can be fairly sophisticated, but at the end of the day are meant to mimic a human operator’s actions. Even though traditional RPA robots are “trained” by recording the user, they aren’t particularly intelligent. Machine learning and AI helps deal with these situations by using natural language processing, intelligent flow control, and a certain level of reasoning and insight on the different paths that the automated system can take. This AI-enabled RPA is one Cognilytica calls “Intelligent Process Automation” (IPA). UiPath is focusing on bringing about the “fourth generation” of the industrial revolution by focusing on intelligence-enabled business processes and workflows with their RPA Enterprise Platform containing AI-enabled robots, process creation, and orchestration.
