Pattern recognition in general is what machine learning systems do: they use an algorithm to learn patterns from data that can be then used to make predictions on new data. In essence, all applications of machine learning are pattern recognition or generation of some kind. Pattern recognition is also one of the fundamental Seven Patterns of AI in which AI systems are trained to identify within data sets those data that fit to a given pattern or those that are anomalies or outliers in the data. Examples of pattern recognition applications in the context of AI include fraud detection, customer purchasing behavior, supply chain analytics, and recommendation systems.
