OpenAI was founded in 2015 by technologists, industrialists, and financiers including Elon Musk, Sam Altman, and others with the mission “to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity”. In 2019, OpenAI LP received a $1 billion investment from Microsoft, which retains an exclusive license on the GPT-3 technology.
